Overview

Maya and the Wave is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the extraordinary journey of World Champion Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira, who defied both towering waves and faced ridicule by the male big wave surfers who dominated the sport. Directed by Stephanie Johnes, the film dives into Maya's relentless pursuit of her passion, from her early days in Rio de Janeiro to her record-breaking achievements at Nazaré, Portugal.

In 2013, Maya suffered a near-fatal wipeout at Nazaré, leading to a prolonged recovery that included multiple back surgeries. Despite facing criticism and doubt from her male peers, she returned with an impressive career highlight, surfing a 73.5-foot wave in 2020—the largest ever ridden by a woman—earning her a Guinness World Record.

The documentary not only showcases breathtaking surfing footage but also sheds light on the systemic challenges Maya faced, highlighting her resilience and determination to redefine success on her own terms and inspiring other female surfers and athletes along the way.

Maya and the Wave serves as an inspiring testament to one woman's unwavering spirit, capturing her journey to overcome physical and societal obstacles to achieve her dreams.
